John Kennedy , better known by his stage name Vikram, is an Indian film actor, voice actor and a playback singer. He made his debut in the 1990 film En Kadhal Kanmani, which was followed by a series of low-budget Tamil and Telugu films and supporting roles in some high budget Malayalam films throughout the early decade. After the critical and commercial success of Sethu (1999) he has been part of numerous other commercially successful films and has earned major critical acclaim for many of his performances. During his years in the Indian film industry, he has won three Filmfare Awards as well as India’s most prestigious National Film Award for Best Actor once. He is called popularly as “Chiyaan” Vikram by his fans.
Vikram is one of the reigning heroes of the Tamil film industry. He has the rare distinction of winning the Filmfare as well as the national award for his path breaking film Pithamagan in the year 2003.
He belongs to a family with no film background. He went to the Montfort School in Yercaud. Since his schooldays, he showed great talent for music and theatrics. He participated in several plays and won appreciation for his talent. He attended college in Chennai, where the student drama societies gave him the staple to hone his acting skills.
For more than a decade, he has been an actor in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu films. His debut as a protagonist was way back in 1989 in the Tamil film, Meera directed by P.C. Sriram. He gave a sensitive performance as a romantic hero. Although the film was reasonably successful, it did exactly rain offers for Vikram. He turned to playing the second hero in small budget films in Tamil in Malayalam.
During the year 2000, a young director called Bala was scouting for someone with a script. It was that of an intense man who becomes a lunatic when his romance goes awry. The film became a runaway hit and Vikram arrived on the Tamil scene. The rest is history. Post-Sethu, all his films have created much expectation in the minds of the audience and Vikram has always fulfilled it beyond doubt. Dil, Gemini, Dhool and Sami also showed his prowess in action-oriented roles and made him a super star in the Tamil film industry .
It is again director Bala who offered him the “Chittan” role in Pithamagan. Chittan is an uncivilised gravedigger who does not utter a single word in the entire film. Vikram coloured his hair, discoloured his teeth and did a lot of homework for the character. His out-of-the-world performance as the grave digger in Pithamagan brought him the National award last year. His recent release Anniyan, which came after a gap of two years is ringing in the cash registers Vikram’s principle and practice is to do only one film at a time.
Vikram was born to Vinod Raj and Rajeshwari in Chennai. His father was from Paramakudi, Ramanathapuram district. Vikram did his schooling at Montfort School, Yercaud. While in school, his love of drama and pursuit of his dream were nurtured. With his parents wanting him to finish college after high school, he graduated in English from Loyola College, Chennai, and followed it up with an M.B.A.
His father is also a film actor. Vikram and his father starred together for the first time in the movie Kanthaswamy. His mother is a retired sub-collector. Vikram married Shylaja, a psychology teacher, from Thalassery, Kerala, in 1992. They have two children, a daughter named Akshita and a son named Dhruv.
As an actor,
Vikram's greatest asset is his versatility; he has capably
played diverse characters in every film. His awe-inspiring and versatile
talent and looks have held an entire nation spellbound.

The
winner of a National Award for Pithamagan, two State Awards and four
Filmfare Awards, Vikram at heart is like any other normal guy, warm,
friendly and affable who one would see walking his dog on the street,
shopping at the mall or jogging on the beach. And that's
precisely what makes Vikram, the man, the actor and the superstar so .
After launching Fanta’s new brand ambassador actress Trisha, Coca Cola India is reported to have roped in actor Vikram to endorse Coke in Tamil Nadu. He replaces another film hero Vijay, who has been the ambassador for the brand in Tamil Nadu for the last two years.
